Reflections on the Wheat-Growing Season

Luckily, Bill didn’t have too many challenges with growing wheat this past year – it turned out to be an excellent season for him. “When harvest wrapped up around Aug. 20, we were very pleased with our results,” Bill explained.  “We’ve cleaned and conditioned our winter wheat seed and some spring wheat seed, but we’ll finish the process in November.

“Our soil profile was filled with moisture from 2011, and we had weekly rains early in the season. So looking back, it was a remarkable growing season for us,” he noted. “The rain ran lower in July, but the wheat is already made by then.”

There was also very low disease pressure of both rusts and scab in his area. Weeds, however, were another story. Some crop protection products worked particularly well for Bill this season. “We used a tank mixture containing Axial® XL herbicide to control wild oat, and it worked very well,” Bill said. “In the past, wild oat was a serious concern; Axial XL has really solved that problem.”

Bill also used an early-season fungicide to protect against prevalent diseases in his area. “We used Tilt® fungicide for early-season tan spot and Septoria control, and we treated for rust and Fusarium head blight later in the season, too.”

Particularly concerning to Bill are deoxynivalenol (DON) levels – if they’re too high, the wheat is rejected for milling. With top-line crop protection products, Bill is better able to ensure a quality wheat crop for his end-users.
